Work Program
Justin Makuc (he/him)
Farm Work Team Leader
Justin joined Gould Farm’s team in winter 2023, bringing a background in agriculture and carpentry from his previous work at The Farm New Marlborough, where he cared for beef cattle, pigs, and chickens. Raised in nearby Monterey, Justin’s connection to Gould Farm dates back to his childhood, with family, friends, and former classmates who were part of the Farm community. He has fond memories of visiting the Farm, where he first encountered the therapeutic community’s positive impact. This lifelong familiarity and an interest in dairy farming drew him to the opportunity to work with Gould Farm’s dairy cattle.
In his role, Justin contributes to an integrated food system that sustains the community, from daily cow care and pasture management to milk bottling. He finds fulfillment in being part of a team that not only produces food but also involves guests, staff, and volunteers in every aspect of the process, creating a shared purpose that strengthens the community. Justin believes in the significance of engaging guests fully in farm work, offering hands-on experiences that build confidence and foster a deep connection to the land.
Managing this dynamic work environment presents unique challenges, especially balancing productivity with therapeutic engagement across a wide range of tasks, from caring for livestock to maintaining equipment and fencing. The team must constantly adapt to fluctuating guest numbers, abilities, and skilllevels, all while ensuring safety and effective teamwork.
Justin holds a Bachelors of Arts in Political Science from the College of the Holy Cross, with a focus on political philosophy—a foundation he brings to his role as a member of the Select Board in Monterey, where he was elected in 2021. His interest in local governance arose during the pandemic as he witnessed the challenges and divisions within his community. Serving as the Chair of the Board, Justin actively participates in maintaining and strengthening the town he calls home.
Although he lives off-Farm with his wife, Emelia, Justin remains deeply connected to Gould Farm’s land and mission. Managing pastures and fields is particularly meaningful to him, as he feels a commitment to maintaining agricultural land and fostering local food production—a counterpoint to the detachment he sees in today’s food systems.
