Activities and the Community

At any given time there are approximately 100 people living in the Gould Farm community. There is room for 42 guests and the rest are staff members and their families.  While guests must be 18 years or older, young children and seniors are present as well.

Every weekday morning at 8:00 the entire community gathers for Morning Meeting.  The agenda includes the announcement of activities, appointments with doctors or therapists, introductions of newcomers, a weather report and other information that might need to be shared.  The meeting ends with a poem or reading and a group sing, generally accompanied by whoever has a guitar in hand.  Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 is Community Meeting time when community issues can be discussed and spontaneous recognition and appreciation are accorded those who have helped others in their daily lives at the Farm.

Socialization and the chance to be creative, learn new things and broaden one’s horizon are important goals as guests begin to rebuild their lives. Gould Farm’s Activities Program is coordinated by the Residential Staff with input from guests and activities are designed to complement the therapeutic experience by offering opportunities in "off time" that are enriching and rewarding.  When interest is expressed, The Farm provides classes and workshops in pottery, painting, writing, yoga, songwriting and as many other areas as possible. Trips to museums, the theater, the movies, the community center, bowling and overnight camping adventures are scheduled as well.  Vans go to malls and bookstores and other shopping sites and transportation to religious services of all denominations is provided. There is also a healthy array of on-farm activities that includes music, dance, acting and poetry reading.
